A tragic turn of events unfolded today just after midnight when a man, later identified as John A. Williams, plowed into pedestrians on Commerce Street, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. Authorities have charged Williams with vehicular homicide by intoxication, as well as multiple counts of reckless endangerment and vehicular assault.
According to the Nashville Government website, Williams, who was celebrating his 25th birthday the day before, was driving his 2017 Mercedes C30 at high speeds when the incident occurred. He attempted to dodge a stopped vehicle on Commerce Street, which led his speeding Mercedes over the curb, onto the sidewalk striking Leroy Wienke, 66, and three of Wienke's family members.
The impact was fatal for Mr. Wienke, a Westfield, Wisconsin resident. He was swiftly transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. The victims' identities were confirmed by authorities, with Wienke's wife and sister-in-law also suffering non-life threatening injuries and subsequently taken to the Vanderbilt for treatment. The passenger in Williams' front seat was injured as well, though not severely.
Upon responding to the scene, officers immediately noted signs of impairment in Williams, including a strong odor of alcohol and the presence of marijuana in the vehicle. With his speech slurred and having trouble standing, Williams remains detained, the bond for his release set at $105,000. The arrest record shows red, bloodshot, watery eyes that further suggested intoxication when officers arrived on scene.
The investigation is ongoing, and the Nashville Police urge anyone with further information to come forward. This tragic incident once again highlights the immense dangers of driving under the influence, and the devastating consequences that can result from a wrong decision.
