An incident on Indianapolis' near east side led to an officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The altercation occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Kealing Avenue when a woman driving a vehicle stopped suddenly near officers and reported being held at gunpoint by a male suspect, as FOX59 reported.
The suspect, while still inside the car, reportedly brandished his weapon at both the officers and an uninvolved citizen present at the scene. In an attempt to neutralize the threat, an officer discharged their firearm, critically injuring the man in the process. "Our officers were here on a theft report, and violence came to them," IMPD Chief Chris Bailey remarked in a statement obtained by FOX59. Despite the subsequent use of a Taser and verbal commands to drop the gun, the suspect continued his standoff with police until they were eventually able to disarm him and extract him from the vehicle.
Following the confrontation, the suspect was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he was described as being in critical but stable condition. WTHR reports that no other injuries occurred during the incident, and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, as per standard protocol. IMPD later clarified that the woman did not know the suspect prior to the incident, and that a handgun was found at the scene.
Local community members and officers received on-site assistance from IMPD's victims assistance unit and chaplain's office following the ordeal. Investigations by IMPD's critical incident response and internal affairs are currently underway, and a civilian majority use-of-force review board will review the incident post-criminal proceedings. "Investigators believe this was an isolated incident, and they said there is no immediate threat to the community," a witness told WISH-TV after hearing officers command the suspect to disarm before shots were fired.
