As the chill of winter sets in, San Diego residents are urged to roll up their sleeves for this year's flu shot. With influenza season looming, public health officials emphasize the importance of vaccinations to shield individuals and communities from the virus.

Statistics speak volumes about the impact of the flu. From fiscal years 2022 to 2024, an annual average of 20,381 San Diegans fell ill to the flu, with 54 tragic fatalities, according to the County News Center. In the face of these numbers, a flu shot represents the best strategy to fend off the virus and protect those among us who are most at risk of serious complications.

The County of San Diego has taken proactive measures to ensure easy access to flu vaccinations. Public Health Centers throughout the region offer the vaccine, and outreach efforts are ramped up each October and November. Last fiscal year, the efforts bore fruit, as over 1,050,000 San Diego residents received their flu shots.

To make getting vaccinated even more convenient, the County is hosting more flu vaccination events—flu points of dispensing, or PODS—that aim to seamlessly deliver up to 200 doses of flu vaccine in a single day. In the upcoming weeks, there will be three additional opportunities for San Diegans to easily get the jab without needing to make an appointment. For those looking to keep flu at bay, these PODS provide a cost-free and accessible avenue.

The forthcoming flu PODS are scheduled as follows: Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Northgate Market from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Chula Vista, Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Southeastern Live Well Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Market St. and Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Mission Valley Library from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Fenton Parkway. Community-centered efforts underscore the county's commitment to public health and preventative care.
