A nearly 11-hour SWAT standoff in San Marcos culminated in the arrest of a man involved in a domestic violence incident. According to a release from the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the situation began around 10 am yesterday in the 2200 block of Flatiron Way. Sheriff's detectives, arriving to follow up on a domestic violence report, were met with resistance by the suspect, identified as Jeremiah Gowdy, born October 19, 1979.
Detectives attempted to engage with Gowdy, who refused to communicate and made threats of self-harm against the deputies. The encounter prompted evacuations of nearly ten units within the apartment complex, which officials described as a precaution. No others were reported to be inside Gowdy's apartment during the standoff.
Resources including the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT), Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT), and the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) responded to the scene. Multiple attempts to negotiate a peaceful resolution were unmet, as Gowdy remained unresponsive. Eventually, the SED/SWAT deployed a chemical agent to gain entry into the apartment, and Gowdy was apprehended without further incident around 9 p.m.
Following his arrest, Gowdy was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation, before being booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges consisting of felony domestic violence and violating an emergency protective order, deputies searched the home under a warrant, confiscating multiple rifles and handguns.
