The Metro Nashville Police Department has apprehended Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown, both aged 24, in connection to the tragic Jefferson Street shooting that took place last Saturday afternoon. The two men were taken into custody at a short-term rental property located on 26th Avenue North, as reported by WKRN. They face criminal homicide charges for their alleged involvement in the violence, which also resulted in nine other people, including three children, sustaining gunshot injuries.
Davis and Brown were identified as suspects through the analysis of security camera footage captured at a nearby building and an MNPD safety camera trailer situated at the parking lot where the fatal encounter occurred. The ability to quickly apprehend the suspects was aided by numerous tips that guided investigators to both individuals. WSMV reports that Brown was previously recognized by authorities due to his involvement in gang activity. During the incident, Davis was found to be armed before his arrest and, according to the MNPD, he had a history of convictions including robbery, felony gun possession, and drug charges as of April 2024.
The shootout, which took place amid Tennessee State University homecoming festivities, involved two groups who exchanged gunfire after a confrontation that supposedly started with an exchange of words. The situation escalated quickly when Davis was reportedly seen in camera footage pulling out a gun, followed immediately by Brown. In the chaos that ensued, Vonquae Johnson, aged 24, was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Two other victims from his group were also shot and required hospital treatment. The violence disrupted an area teeming with innocent bystanders, leaving the community in shock and grieving the loss of yet another young life.
"The shooters had no regard for human life and put a crowd of innocent persons, including children, in extreme danger," MNPD Chief John Drake stated, according to WSMV. He continued to emphasize the need for the entire criminal justice system to treat violent gun crime with the seriousness it demands resulting incarceration for those convicted. The swift action by the Metro Police reflects an ongoing effort to firmly address gun-related violence and bring to justice those who endanger the lives of the community members.
