A Utah man has been arrested on charges of felony child endangerment in connection with his youngest child's death, as per the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Jose Mora Rodriguez, 33, finds himself behind bars weeks after his wife's arrest for child abuse homicide involving their 4-month-old child. According to ABC4, this new charge arose after an ongoing investigation into the baby's death uncovered signs of neglect concerning their other children.
As part of the investigation, warrants were obtained to test the hair follicles of the siblings for potential exposure to controlled substances, the results for their 8-year-old son came back positive for THC metabolite, indicative of ongoing exposure to marijuana, as reported by KUTV, a breach of safety in the child's living environment. However, it's important to note that the 12-year-old sibling's results were clear of any substances.
Court documents cited by local media outlets did not specify what led to the application of the search warrant beyond the scope of the initial case. Nevertheless, during the execution of this warrant at the Rodriguez residence, authorities discovered marijuana paraphernalia "in plain view." This discovery, which included marijuana "wax," was made in the same vicinity where the young boy slept, effectively raising concerns over the environment in which the children were being raised.
Further adding to the gravity of the situation, the boy's room, as described by a police booking affidavit, held the paraphernalia, which beyond a doubt, should never have been within reach of children. Having been "located within the attached bathroom" as well, the paraphernalia's presence exemplifies an evident disregard for child safety, as detailed by KSL. With the eldest child's tests returning negative, the focus remains on the circumstances that led to the 8-year-old's exposure to cannabis products.
Details on the case continue to emerge as investigations proceed. Meanwhile, Jose Mora Rodriguez faces the legal repercussions of the findings, signifying a broader conversation on child welfare and parental responsibility. With both parents now in custody, the fate of their children hangs in balance as authorities work to ensure their safety and well-being.
