A group of fishermen from San Diego experienced a significant catch this week, landing a mammoth 492-pound swordfish. The fish was caught off the coast of San Diego by the charter boat "Tuna Twins," as reported by FOX5 San Diego. This near-record catch was challenging to bring aboard, requiring additional support and a three-hour effort to secure it with a gaff.
The size of the swordfish closely approaches the standing state record, which is a 520-pound fish caught, also in San Diego last year. Despite its impressive heft, the caught swordfish did indeed fall short by 28 pounds. Through an Instagram post from the boat’s account, @tuna_twins expressed their triumph and dedication. "We were lucky to harvest the fish of a lifetime yesterday - 492 lbs on the @danalanding scale and looking to be the second biggest swordfish caught (and weighed) in the state of CA," the post read.
Taking to social media, the @tuna_twins team conveyed the culmination of their efforts. "We have been dedicated to the pursuit of these fish via rod and reel, trying our best to learn, and improve on every trip. Yesterday, on our second trip of the year, it all came together and we were rewarded with this special fish," they shared in the post.
Plans for the massive swordfish include processing and distribution amongst the fishermen's friends and family across the nation. The catch, which was ceremoniously weighed at Dana Landing, marks a significant personal achievement for the group, as well as a notable event for Californian sportfishing. The @tuna_twins Instagram account detailed the excitement and sense of accomplishment associated with the catch, underscoring a commitment to the sport and the respect for the creatures they pursue.
