An elderly woman in a wheelchair was pronounced dead after a multi-vehicle crash on the I-65 in Northwest Indiana. The incident occurred around 11:35 a.m. on Thursday as snow compromised visibility on the interstate. According to WGN-TV, police were called to the scene near the 228-mile marker, close to the Demotte/Roselawn exit, where they found a white Chevy Trailblazer had rear-ended a Toyota Sienna, subsequently causing it to collide with a semi-truck.

The crash resulted in fatal injuries for Mary Sumara, 77, of Demotte, who was seated in her wheelchair in the back of the Sienna. The Jasper County Coroner's Office later declared her deceased, as per WISH-TV.

Snowy conditions were mentioned as a limiting factor in drivers's visibility, which is believed to have contributed to the incident. "The driver of the Trailblazer and a one-year-old passenger, who was also in the Trailblazer, were taken to Franciscan Hospital in Crown Point for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries," in a statement obtained by WISH-TV. The driver of the semi involved in the crash was found unharmed.
