The stretch of Card Sound Road was temporarily closed due to a traffic incident but has since been reopened to the public. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported that the road was closed in both directions near the north Key Largo area after a crash occurred on the Miami-Dade County side of the highway. The closure began early Sunday afternoon, affecting countless travelers and residents alike, according to Miami Herald.
Authorities were quick to respond but have not disclosed specifics on an incident. The closure of the roadway, one of only two roads that lead into the Florida Keys, drew immediate attention because of its potential to disrupt travel into the popular destination. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office used its social media platform to communicate the shutdown and subsequent reopening of the highway, a move that underscored the severity of the interruption to the normal flow of traffic.
The reopening was announced before the evening rush, with the roadway being cleared for use by 6:30 p.m. that same day. Details on whether there were any injuries sustained as a result of the crash were not immediately made available by the authorities
An update from the Sheriff's Office confirmed that the traffic flow on Card Sound Road was fully restored.
