The spate of commercial burglaries stretching across several Chicago neighborhoods has local business owners on high alert. According to an official announcement by the Chicago Police Department, retail establishments in Albany Park, Belmont Cragin, Belmont Heights East Albany Park, Hermosa, Irving Park, Near South Side Norwood Park, Pulaski Park, and West Town neighborhoods have been targeted by a group of thieves. The burglaries have taken place across the 1st, 12th, 14th, 16th, 17th, and 25th Districts.
The offenders, wearing dark clothing and masks to obscure their identities, have been forcibly entering through compromised front glass doors or side windows. After breaking in, they reportedly zero in on cash boxes and registers with a preference for the predawn hours. The string of crimes began in late October and has continued into late November, challenging local law enforcement.
Incident locations have ranged from the 1500 block of N. Ashland to the 2200 block of W. Chicago. In their official communication, the police have shared a description of the culprits involved in these incidents: 4-5 males decked in dark clothing, along with the vehicles that have been used which include a black Nissan Altima, a gray Infiniti G37, a dark Nissan SUV, and a white Infiniti sedan.
Business owners are urged to report any suspicious activity immediately and to be vigilant about safeguarding their premises. Steps being recommended include maintaining the functionality of surveillance cameras and not pursuing assailants but instead providing what details can to the police. If witnesses are present, their contact information should be secured, which might assist in the ongoing investigations. As the thieves have not been apprehended, remaining cautious is essential to community safety and preventing further losses.
