According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the incident occurred at a four-story building located at 1927 W. School St. around 6 p.m., with crews deploying four hose lines and battling the fire until it was extinguished by about 7:30 p.m. Though the conflagration escalated to the point where it affected adjacent properties, no injuries were reported in the aftermath.
The fire, which also involved a neighboring duplex house showcasing Victorian gingerbread trim and decorative brackets, along with a newer house at 1923 W. School Street, prompted the Fire Department to issue a still-and-box alarm—calling for additional equipment and manpower, as flames and smoke made their visibility known from across the North Branch of the Chicago River at Belmont Avenue, the CBS News Chicago reported. Firefighters engaged intensely with the flames, which had taken hold of the apartment building's top floor between Damen and Wolcott avenues.
The severity of the fire necessitated a defensive approach from officials, with the Chicago Fire Department confirming that the flames had indeed trespassed beyond their point of origin. Video footage from the Citizen app captured the dramatic scene as firefighters grappled with the blaze. The Fire Department later carried out a thorough search of the area and was able to confirm that no individuals were found inside the buildings affected by this incident.
