Chicago resident Hamidullah Tribble has been sentenced to a significant 100-month stint in federal prison. After a jury found him guilty of possessing a firearm as a felon, Tribble is looking at over eight years behind bars, followed by two years of supervised release. U.S. District Court Judge Philip P. Simon handed down the sentence, United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson's office confirmed.
On a summer day last 2022, July 19, Tribble decided to lead law enforcement on a wild chase. Starting in LaPorte County, Indiana, and winding into Lake County, Tribble reached speeds topping 100 mph. Despite the valiant efforts of the law enforcement officers, Tribble collided with a semi-trailer and another vehicle. During his arrest, a loaded semi-automatic pistol was found tucked in his waistband, according to the US Department of Justice.
Tribble's past is marred by previous offenses, including possessing a firearm with a defaced serial number, possession of a stolen vehicle, and criminal sexual abuse, all felonies under Illinois law. These prior convictions barred him from legally possessing firearms or ammunition.
The investigation leading to Tribble's prosecution was a concerted effort, calling upon resources from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force as well as the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorney Kristian R. Mukoski prosecuted the case.
Tribble’s sentencing also shines a spotlight on Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aiming to bring down violent crime and gun violence rates. Launched in 2021, the Department’s violent crime reduction strategy is building on fostering trust and legitimacy within communities, supporting groups that prevent violence, focusing enforcement priorities strategically, and rigorously measuring outcomes to ensure effectiveness.
