A Chicago man is facing charges including attempted murder and a hate crime after an attack on an Orthodox Jewish man and shots fired at responding police and paramedics. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, mapped out several local synagogues and Jewish schools on his cellphone before the incident that took place in West Ridge, near a synagogue just a block from where the attack occurred.

At the hearing on Friday, Assistant State’s Attorney Anne McCord Rodgers described the act as an attempted assassination of these people. Abdallahi's movements, captured on surveillance footage, depicted an ominous path from shooting the victim, retreating, then returning to the scene and engaging in gunfire with authorities. It was an attack that appears to have been meticulously planned and tragically unfolded on the morning of October 26, unfolding as a scene of chaos captured on camera as Abdallahi, after shooting the Jewish man, targeted first responders that consisted of four police officers and a pair of paramedics.

Abdallahi, who had resided in the U.S. for at least two years, suffered multiple gunshot wounds during a shootout with police and was hospitalized. In detailing the evidence against Abdallahi, Rodgers noted his phone contained over 100 antisemitic and pro-Hamas images and videos. His search history also included the Jewish Community Center and a gun store.

Further, NBC Chicago reports that Abdallahi's seized cell phone revealed extensive searches for synagogues, a Jewish community center, and a gun range, displaying premeditation and an alarming focus on Jewish institutions, prosecutors say. The synagogue addresses he had saved on Google Maps included The Congregation Ezras Israel and KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation. The footage after the shooting is a chilling sequence of events where police officers and paramedics became targets of Abdallahi's gunfire. The gunman fell onto the sidewalk but sat up and continued firing at officers.

Judge Susana Ortiz has ordered Abdallahi detained on multiple counts of attempted murder, hate crime, and terrorism charges. The public defender, Josh Thigpen, mentioned Abdallahi's employment history at an Amazon warehouse. While details of the case continue to unfold, the targeted nature of the crime has cast a new shadow over public safety and the fight against hate crimes in Chicago.
