The Chicago Police Department is ramping up their efforts to curb impaired driving in the city with a DUI Saturation Patrol occurring this weekend in the 19th (Town Hall) District. According to Chicago Police Department's announcement, officers will be on high alert from Friday, November 22, 2024, at 6 p.m., to 2 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, looking not only to catch potential DUI violations but to also strictly enforce traffic laws related to speed, seat belts, and more.

The operation's goal is simple – to significantly reduce the risk of vehicular accidents caused by alcohol impairment. Officers specially trained to identify symptoms of driver impairment will steadily monitor traffic. The Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit might also be in play to quickly process DUI charges on the spot, potentially mitigating the time it takes to issue Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds). The previous weekend's patrol in the 12th (Near West) District resulted in 80 citations, including 33 for unsafe vehicle violations and 13 for insurance infringements, reminding residents that the vigilance of these patrols is broad and unyielding.

While no DUI arrests were made during the last saturation patrol, the police did issue citations for a range of offenses that serve as indicators of the types of behaviors patrols are targeting. According to the recent report, there were five citations each for seat belt and driver's license violations, among others. Citizens are urged to take heed of these patrols, understanding that the measures are in place for their safety and that of their community.

With Thanksgiving holiday around the corner, law enforcement is under added pressure to ensure road safety. These increased efforts to carefully monitor traffic, and enforce existing traffic laws is an obvious response to this seasonal concern. It is important for drivers to keep in mind that speed detection devices are being deployed during patrol hours to catch those who might choose to dangerously speed through the streets of Chicago.
