In an unusual altercation early Saturday on Chicago's South Side, two Chicago police officers suffered injuries after being assaulted with a fire extinguisher while inside their patrol car. According to CBS Chicago, the attack transpired around 5 a.m. in the 5900 block of South Ashland Avenue as an unknown assailant approached the marked vehicle and deployed the extinguisher, filling the interior with fumes.
The officers, having inhaled the chemical contents, were promptly treated at the scene and released, avoiding a trip to the hospital. Although observed in an issued statement, no one had been detained in connection with the episode by Saturday, as Area 1 detectives continued with their investigation into the matter.
NBC Chicago added to the tale, noting the incident's location near South Ashland Avenue and West Taylor Street. The Chicago Police Department has not provided details on the motive or the circumstances leading up to the attack, leaving the community with questions regarding the safety of its officers and the broader implications for public safety.
With the assailant at large, the investigation remains open, reaching out to witnesses in hopes of shedding light on the attack. The unprovoked nature of the incident, treated and released, stresses the inherent risks police officers face even when not actively engaged in confrontation.
