The Chicago Police Department has announced a DUI Saturation Patrol initiative targeting the 5th (Calumet) and 20th (Lincoln) Districts this weekend. Officers in these areas will be on high alert for impaired drivers beginning from 6 p.m. Friday, November 29, through 2 a.m. Saturday, and again from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday in the Lincoln District. The Chicago Police Department explains that this intensive patrol effort will focus on potential signs of driving under the influence, alongside monitoring for speed, alcohol-related, and seat belt violations.
Past enforcement efforts suggest an emphasis on road safety beyond just DUIs. A DUI Saturation Patrol carried out in the 19th (Town Hall) District on November 22-23, led to a diverse array of citations including for unsafe vehicle violations, insurance violations, and speed violations. However, there were no arrests made for driving under the influence, open liquor, or seat belt and child seat violations. The same operation saw an individual charged with a suspended or revoked license, three with no driver's license, one for driving while distracted on a cell phone, and a collection of other traffic infringements totaling 44 citations, as reported by the Chicago Police Department.
The efforts of the Chicago Police Department are part of a continuous commitment to road safety and the reduction of impaired driving incidents. While past results, such as those from the Town Hall District, showed zero DUI arrests, the department likely views the saturation patrols as a deterrent that reminds citizens of the risks associated with irresponsible driving behaviors, the CPD noted.
