Chicago-based rapper Lil Durk has declared his innocence before a federal court in the midst of serious charges. He entered a not-guilty plea to allegations of arranging a murder-for-hire scheme, as reported on November 14 by the Chicago Sun-Times. The case puts Durk Banks, the musician's legal name, at the heart of a federal investigation surrounding the attempted revenge killing of fellow rapper Quando Rondo in 2022.
A scheduled trial is set for January 7, 2025, and Banks is currently being held without bail since his arrest on October 24 after prosecutors labeled him as a flight risk and a threat to community safety. According to the ABC 7 Chicago, an arrest three weeks prior in Miami occurred as Banks allegedly attempted to flee the country.
Federal prosecutors are painting a somber picture of Banks' record label, Only the Family. Detailed in court documents obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, the label is accused of doubling as a criminal enterprise, orchestrating events of extreme violence including assault and murder under Banks' direction. Moreover, the indictment alleges that Banks has previously placed bounties on individuals, including targets tied to recent high-profile shootings in the rap community.
The charges arise from a complex tapestry of retaliation and gang violence that has marred Chicago's music scene. The failed attempt on Quando Rondo, whose real name is Tyquian Bowman, took the life of his cousin, pinpointing a cycle of violence that spiraled from the murder of King Von, a protégé of Banks. Von, whose real name was Dayvon Bennett, lost his life in 2020 outside an Atlanta establishment, in an incident involving Bowman's entourage. This history comes full circle as Banks, once tied to other shootings, now faces the potential of life behind bars. His detention hearing is slated for December 12, ahead of the main trial in January.
