
Devonte Johnson, a 28-year-old Dorchester resident, was arrested yesterday in connection with a brush fire in Milford, Massachusetts. The fire occurred in a wooded area off of West Street and was reported to the Milford police at approximately 8:48 a.m., NBC Boston reports. Responding to the incident, police officers reportedly apprehended Johnson after a brief chase on foot when he was seen fleeing the scene.
According to police, Johnson is being held on a $1,500 bail and is awaiting arraignment on multiple criminal charges, including burning land, trees, lumber, and produce, setting a fire in the open, as well as disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace, 7NEWS reported.
The specifics of the incident, such as the motive behind the arson or if Johnson has retained legal representation, were not revealed in initial reports. He was remanded to the Worcester House of Corrections. The charges against him highlight a larger issue in Massachusetts, with an increase in outdoor fires reported last month.
State fire officials have reported a significant increase in outdoor fires, with 196 incidents recorded last month, well above the average of 15. This rise represents more than a tenfold increase compared to typical October figures.
