A 16-year-old student from Hinsdale South High School in Willowbrook has been detained after authorities accused him of bringing a loaded gun to school. According to a press release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the juvenile, whose name has not been disclosed due to his age, faces charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon in Public – School, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm – Under 18. In a hearing, Judge Chantelle Porter ordered his detention pending a further court date on December 2.
Acting on a tip received on November 21, school officials quickly alerted law enforcement, leading to the student's arrest at Hinsdale South High School. A 9mm Taurus GX-4 handgun was reportedly found in his possession. The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office quoted Robert Berlin saying, "There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for a sixteen-year-old boy to be in possession of a loaded firearm, particularly at a school, as alleged in this case."
The student’s detainment serves as a stark reminder of ongoing concerns relating to weapons in educational settings. With Berlin asserting, "My office takes any sign of potential violence involving a school very seriously," as per the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Assistant State’s Attorney Bethany Jackson was thanked for her role, in ensuring schools remain as secure environments for learning and development.
While the charges have drawn attention, it is important to remember that they constitute only allegations and not proof of guilt. The principles of justice demand that the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
