The Illinois State Police is currently in mourning after an unexpected loss. Their K-9, Riggs, suffered a "cardiac event" on Tuesday leading to his untimely passing at the age of 10. Riggs was a seasoned member of the force, graduating with Canine Class 75 in the spring of 2017 and initially partnering with Sgt. Jeremy Moyer of District 11, as reported by WGN-TV.
In 2018, Riggs was re-assigned to work alongside Sgt. Steve Ent as a part of the Statewide CRIMPAT Team. It was here Riggs proved to rigorously work to protect the citizens of Illinois. According to NewsChannel 20, he assisted in disrupting the trafficking of illegal narcotics and played a key role in dismantling drug syndicates operating within and across the state borders.
Throughout an impressive eight-year career, Riggs made significant contributions to law enforcement efforts. His accolades include assisting in the seizure of noteworthy amounts of illegal substances: 220 kilograms of cocaine, 105 kilograms of heroin, 131 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 2,032 pounds of illegal cannabis. Furthermore, Riggs aided in the confiscation of 97 firearms and more than $5 million in U.S. currency.
The loss of K-9 Riggs has deeply impacted the Illinois State Police community, who consider him not merely an asset but a beloved partner. "Canine Riggs was a loyal, beloved partner and team member whose presence will be missed dearly," ISP said, according to a statement obtained by WGN-TV. They added, "Our prayers are with Sgt. Ent, his family, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside Riggs during his distinguished career." Riggs' notable service and dedication to helping keep communities safe are remembered as he is honored posthumously.
