A tragic incident unfolded on a Peru, Indiana road late Friday evening. 66-year-old Jeffrey Moss, a resident of Logansport, was fatally struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross U.S. Highway 24. According to a news release by Indiana State Police, the collision occurred shortly after 9 p.m. Moss was pronounced dead at the scene by the Miami County Coroner’s Office, as reported by FOX59.
Indiana State Police report that a 2008 Chevrolet Uplander, operated by a woman hailing from Peru, Indiana, was heading westbound on the highway when the incident took place at the intersection near County Road 550 East. Darkness may have contributed to the unfortunate event, with visibility presumably low at the time of the crash. ISP noted that "it was dark out at the time of the crash," although they also indicated that neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have been a factor, as per their preliminary findings, according to WTHR.
The driver of the Chevrolet has been identified as Stephanie Dewitt from Peru. Following the collision, all necessary legal and investigative protocols were initiated, including a toxicology test, although the results are still pending. As of now, no charges have been filed as the investigation remains active, with various agencies such as the Miami County Sheriff's Office and ISP's Peru Post being involved.
