A federal jury in Salt Lake City has charged Luis Refugio Brindas Guzman, a foreign national residing in Utah, with a spate of drug crimes following his apprehension for possession of narcotics. As reported by the U.S. Department of Justice, Guzman, 27, was indicted after an initial charge was filed against him on October 4.
The legal entanglement began when the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force launched an investigation into Guzman and associates in July 2024, suspecting their involvement in a drug trafficking ring operating in the District of Utah. In October, undercovers carried out a ruse to purchase a substantial amount of methamphetamine from the suspect, Guzman then arrived at the designated location in a Nissan Rogue, at which point officers searched, uncovering roughly 6,682 grams of methamphetamine, alongside heroin and marijuana remnants. Following his arrest, officials searched his residence where they discovered additional narcotics including over 7,000 grams of methamphetamine, a significant stash of fentanyl, estimated to be around 35,000 pills, and a 9mm handgun.
Charges against Guzman are extensive, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl, illegal firearm and ammunition possession by an alien, and reentrance by a previously deported alien. His initial court appearance post-indictment was set for October 31, at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse.
U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins for the District of Utah made the announcement, underscoring the collaborative efforts of the FBI’s WMDTF who spearheaded the investigations into the drug syndicate. "The case is being investigated by the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force," according to the U.S. Department of Justice, and is presently in the hands of the District of Utah's prosecutor's office for trial proceedings.
