Early Thursday morning, a serious collision on the Stevenson Expressway in suburban Hodgkins resulted in three people being injured, including one with life-threatening injuries. The incident, which involved two vehicles, occurred just after midnight and prompted a shutdown of the northbound lanes of Interstate 55, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Emergency responders arrived at the crash site near La Grange Road at approximately 12:15 a.m., where they discovered the wreckage and the victims. "Three people suffered injuries and were taken to area hospitals," state police said, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, one of the victims' injuries was severe enough to be considered life-threatening. The inbound lanes were closed for several hours while authorities worked to clear the scene and investigate the circumstances behind the collision.
The expressway was subsequently reopened by 6 a.m., following the efforts of the Illinois State Police to manage the site and complete preliminary investigations. This restoration of traffic flow minimized the disruption to the early morning commute, as stated by ABC7 Chicago.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Illinois State Police. The identities of the individuals involved have not been released at this time, however, all victims were promptly attended to and transported for medical care following the accident.
