Mount Prospect has become the grim backdrop for a violent altercation that took place earlier this year, leading to two men being charged with attempted murder. Harley J. Babcock, a 21-year-old from Des Plaines, and Kyle Surz, who is 20 and hails from Elgin, found themselves arrested after a confrontation turned bloody near a community park.
Held on the night of Sept. 1, the incident, according to FOX 32 Chicago, occurred near the RexPlex at 420 W. Dempster St., where a barbecue was unfolding just to the north of the park. After an argument broke out between the victim, a 33-year-old man, and the two suspects, the dispute quickly escalated. Babcock and Surz reported arriving at the scene and instigating the argument, are accused of significantly heightening the tension that night.
Suffering from a gunshot and a knife wound, the victim managed to run for help, reaching a BP Gas Station at 800 S. Elmhurst Rd. in Des Plaines, according to the same report. The local hospital, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, became his sanctuary, providing treatment for injuries deemed not life-threatening.
As reported by the Daily Herald, Babcock and Surz have both been denied pretrial release, with their cases proceeding to court. Babcock was brought before the judge on Nov. 6, while Surz is expected to face his hearing on Nov. 26.
