Two University of Chicago students faced an alarming threat early Sunday when they were robbed at gunpoint near campus, an incident that reportedly ensued without physical harm yet left the university community on edge.
Around 12:40 a.m., as the students walked in proximity to the Campus North Residence Hall, located on East 55th Street, they encountered three armed suspects who emerged from a black sedan, potentially a Maserati, a security alert from the University of Chicago detailed, the brazen threesome brandishing handguns and swiftly divesting the students of their belongings before peeling away eastbound on 55th Street,
The incidents of robbery were separately echoed by WGN-TV and CBS News, both highlighting the theft of the students' property and the rapid escape of the suspects; yet, a third robbery reported mere minutes earlier on the 5500 block of South Cornell remains shrouded in mystery, with officials yet to confirm if it connects to the student-related crimes.
As University of Chicago police delve into the investigation, staff advice casts a light on the vigilance necessary for students in such troubling times: avoid solitary nocturnal walks, keep one's phone tucked away, the school's emergency phones — a beacon for help, that if needed, should not be stranded ignored and unused in the sea of urban landscape,
