Chicago Man Charged with First-Degree Murder in Shooting of Oak Park Detective Allan ReddinsSource: Oak Park Police Department

A man from Chicago is facing charges after the fatal shooting of an Oak Park detective, village officials reported. 37-year-old Jerrell Thomas has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The incident took place Friday morning when Detective Allan Reddins was shot after responding to a report of an armed man leaving a Chase Bank. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Thomas is also charged with aggravated battery on a police officer, resisting a police officer, and domestic battery from previous arrests. The confrontation left Reddins with a fatal wound to the left side and Thomas with a gunshot wound to the leg. Shortly after the incident, Reddins was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center at 10:10 a.m., marking the department's first line-of-duty death since 1938.

Oak Park Police Chief Shatonya Johnson called the day of the shooting "the worst day of any chief of police.” In a statement obtained by CBS News Chicago, Johnson remembered Reddins as a "natural-born leader, devoted father" and described the heartache experienced by the department and his family. Reddins leaves behind a 19-year-old son, along with his mother and siblings.

The event disrupted the community, with bullet holes reported in the windows of the main library in Oak Park. “Nothing happens up here. You may find a fight or so, but nothing like this will ever happen here. So it's wild," said Nicholas Gradishar, a witness who overheard gunshots and then came to find the library surrounded by officers. Gradishar captured footage of Thomas on the ground, with law enforcement ensuring to quickly take him into custody. Thomas remains in the hospital, and no bond hearing has been set.
