Business owners in Chicago's 16th (Jefferson Park) and 17th (Albany Park) Districts are being alerted to a series of commercial burglaries that have troubled the neighborhoods. According to the Chicago Police Department, the incidents involved assailants breaking front windows to access the stores and make off with cash and electronics.
Thinking they entered without making noise, the burglaries included the unknown offenders who shattered glass windows late at night or during the early morning hours. The offenders targeted money in the registers predominantly, though miscellaneous electronics were also taken before fleeing the premises.
The burglaries seem to follow a pattern, with incidents reported across various blocks, including W. Lawrence Ave., W. Irving Park Rd., N. Pulaski Rd., W. Montrose Ave., W. Peterson Ave., N. Kedzie Ave., W. Foster Ave., and W. Bryn Mawr Ave. Attacks were conducted precisely at times ranging from midnight to the early morning.
The offenders have been described as two individuals approximately 5'06"-5'10" in height, aged between 15-30 years. The businesses that were unable to immediately apprehend the suspects even with this description, are now taking extra measures to secure their premises.
Chicago Police have advised business owners to maintain well-lit perimeters, secure doors, and windows, and quickly repair any damages that might offer easy entry. Suspicious activities should be reported without delay. In case a business falls victim to this string of burglaries, owners have been instructed to avoid disturbing the crime scene and to preserve video evidence when available.
Local merchants are encouraged to be vigilant and collaborate in sharing information to curb this recent wave of crime. Any witnesses or individuals with information about these crimes are urged to contact the authorities.
