A collision involving a Zionsville Community Schools bus and a car left one driver with minor injuries and caused significant disruption to the school's transportation system. The crash occurred yesterday afternoon at the intersection of 5th and Oak Street in Zionsville, as reported by WTHR. A white Pontiac G6 struck the school bus, which was en route to dropping students home after the school day, and became lodged beneath it.
Authorities arrived quickly at the scene shortly after the incident, which was to have taken place around 2:45 p.m. According to FOX59, the bus had departed from Eagle Elementary just minutes before. The driver of the Pontiac was trapped and had to be freed by the Zionsville Fire Department.
Subsequent to the extraction, the driver was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Zionsville Police Captain Marius Klykken underscored the safety of the students onboard in a statement obtained by IndyStar, "None of the children were injured either," he said. The collision was of a lower speed, with no serious injuries reported among the students, who were examined by EMTs on site.
Despite the minimal physical harm, the crash caused delays and prompted a change in the usual bus routes, with several buses having to be significantly delayed or re-routed. School officials and counselors were made available to provide support to the students affected by the event, as mentioned by Zionsville School officials and confirmed by FOX59. Following the accident, an extra bus was brought in to ensure all the children were safely transported from the scene.
During the clean-up operation, the affected road section was closed to traffic, this being a main thoroughfare in the suburban area northwest of Indianapolis. Zionsville, with a population of over 7,500, experienced congested traffic patterns due to the unexpected incident. Further investigations into the crash by Zionsville Police are underway, but no additional details have been released at this time.
