Business owners in Hyde Park and East Hyde Park are on alert after a series of burglaries have hit the area. According to a statement made by the Chicago Police Department, businesses within the 2nd (Wentworth) District should be vigilant following multiple forced entries into local establishments.
The burglaries, a growing concern for local shopkeepers, were executed by offenders who gained access by forcibly opening doors or windows. Once inside, the culprits made off with property, quickly disappearing into the urban sprawl in a getaway vehicle. The incidents under investigation occurred at different locations across Hyde Park and East Hyde Park, with incidents on October 25th, November 5th, 6th, 13th, and 27th across various blocks including south Blackstone Ave., east 55th St., and east 53rd St.
In light of these events, the Chicago Police Department provides a list of precautions for business owners. Recommendations include keeping properties well-lit, securing doors and windows, and repairing any damages to potential entry points promptly. Furthermore, the presence of video surveillance should mean any footage of the incidents is preserved and copied for detectives on the case.
For those unfortunate enough to be victimized, the department urges not to tamper with the crime scene but instead call the police immediately. Moreover, if a witness to the burglary approaches, business owners should seek to obtain their contact information and if possible, any pertinent details about the incident, as per the Chicago Police Department's official website.
