A teenager was taken into custody by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department after an attempted armed robbery using an airsoft gun. The incident occurred on the north side of Indianapolis, as confirmed in FOX59. Police were summoned to the 3900 block of N. Meridian Street last Saturday, where they encountered a victim alleging that a young male had threatened her with what appeared to be a handgun.
The suspect, later identified as a 13-year-old, reportedly demanded the woman’s wallet and phone. According to the victim's statement obtained by WRTV, he fled the scene after she informed him that she had nothing to give. Police officers who were searching the area for the suspect found a male in the 3600 block of N. Illinois Street, wearing a grey and black hoodie and fitting the suspect's description.
Upon detaining the young male, officers discovered he was carrying a silver and black handgun. The gun was later identified as an airsoft gun, which, despite its non-lethal design, bears close resemblance to a real firearm. The quick response and concerted efforts by the IMPD officers were highlighted in a Facebook post from IMPD News, emphasizing the cooperation of the victim that led to the positive identification and arrest of the juvenile suspect.
The teen was arrested on preliminary charges of armed robbery and transported to the Juvenile Detention Center. The final decision on the charges will be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, as noted by IMPD News. They also pointed out that an arrest and a charge are merely accusations, and the individual should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
