A tragic incident at a Lehi gas station in September has led to serious legal consequences for a mother whose child died after an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. Jennifer Marie Pu'u is now facing manslaughter charges after her 8-year-old son, who had special needs, reportedly shot himself while alone in their car at a Maverik gas station, according to KUTV. Court documents reveal that the boy was left unattended when the fatal incident occurred.
On the day of the incident, September 2, the child was in his mother's vehicle when he accidentally shot himself in the head. Pu'u was reportedly inside the gas station at the time. Despite quickly being taken to a local hospital in Lehi and then flown to another hospital, the child died the next morning due to his injury, as reported by ABC4. The decision to charge Pu'u with manslaughter has undoubtedly been influenced to some extent by the fact that she left a lethal weapon within the reach of a child unable to understand the significant danger it posed.
Further details highlighted in the coverage show that Pu'u's son, Sargy, suffered from autism and had a mental capacity similar to that of a two-year-old. It was revealed that the boy had previously played with toy guns, but according to a behavioral therapist cited in court documents, he had "no concept of the danger a real gun presented." as obtained by FOX 13. The charge of manslaughter brings into harsh light the responsibilities of firearm owners, especially around children with cognitive disabilities.
