Fort Wayne was the scene of a tragic event early Thursday morning when a vehicle struck and killed a man in a wheelchair. The Allen County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 46-year-old David Lewis Cullen Jr. from Fort Wayne. The incident occurred at the intersection of Crescent Avenue and East State Boulevard, as reported by WISH-TV. It was around 6 a.m. when the fatal collision took place in what is described as a commercial area, just northeast of downtown Fort Wayne.
The circumstances surrounding the incident begin to paint a picture of its immediacy. A Three Rivers Ambulance Authority unit fortuitously came upon the aftermath and found the injured Mr. Cullen. They attempted to render medical aid before he was pronounced dead at the scene, as told by WANE. Initial reports had suggested the incident might have been a hit-and-run, however, it was later confirmed that the driver did, in fact, return to the scene and was cooperating with the authorities.
Investigations by the local law enforcement continue, even as the early morning traffic was brought to a standstill by the crash. The Fort Wayne Police Department noted in their statement that Cullen was on the roadway at the time he was struck. Although speed was initially a concern, police ruled it out as a factor after reviewing dash cam footage from the ambulance and surveillance videos from nearby businesses, which was also corroborated by 21Alive News.
The corner's investigation concluded that Cullen’s death was accidental, caused by multiple blunt force injuries.
