The Lawrence Police Department is currently undertaking an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that unfolded early this morning. According to information provided by WRTV, the incident occurred near East 52nd Street and North Kercheval Drive at about 12:15 a.m. During what has been described as a routine traffic stop, the situation escalated "at some point" leading to officers discharging their firearms.
The individual, subsequently wounded in the event, was urgently conveyed to Methodist Hospital and is currently reported to be in critical condition. No injuries amongst the officers present were recorded, as per police statements.

Reports indicate that two officers conducted the traffic stop, during which the driver of the vehicle is said to have reached for a rifle located on the passenger seat. This action purportedly prompted the officers to fire at the suspect, who managed to flee the scene.
The vehicle associated with the suspect was later discovered unoccupied within a nearby apartment complex, surrounded by traces of blood. A correlation was established between an individual who walked into Community North Hospital with gunshot wounds and the earlier traffic stop incident. The suspect was eventually transported to Methodist Hospital in a grave condition.
