A violent encounter at a St. Charles assisted living facility culminated in police fatally shooting a man who was brandishing a chainsaw at residents and officers. The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, incited officers to respond to the River Glen of St. Charles after witnesses reported a shirtless man attempting to cut down a tree on the property, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Before law enforcement arrived, the man had made his way into the lobby, where he confronted inhabitants with the chainsaw. The officers' initial approach was to de-escalate the tension, however, when their attempts—including the use of a Taser—failed as the man persisted in his aggression, they resorted to using lethal force. "Officers tried to de-escalate the situation and then used a Taser," but the man continued to attack residents and officers, police said, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The man, who has not been identified pending notification of the next of kin, was pronounced deceased at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. The incident, which has jarred the local community, is now subject to an investigation by the Illinois State Police, following the protocol for the use of force incidents. This investigation will eventually make its way to the Kane County State's Attorney's office, according to the police.
Meanwhile, at the River Glen of St. Charles, no lasting physical harm was reported among the residents and officers involved, only minor injuries were treated. As per a CBS News Chicago inquiry made at the scene—where calm had been restored—employees assured that all residents, and staff were safe following the disturbance, and expressed gratitude towards the officers' responsive action. "Illinois State Police are investigating the use of force by St. Charles police, as per protocol," as mentioned in the CBS News Chicago report.
The motive of the assailant and possible connections he may have had with the facility remain unclear.
