Chaos erupted on Michigan Avenue Wednesday night as a stolen Jeep Cherokee, operated by a 16-year-old, barreled through the River North neighborhood, igniting a multi-vehicle collision that left three children and several adults injured. According to ABC7, the teenager, heading south in Michigan, ran a red light at a bustling intersection, causing havoc as the Jeep slammed into a Dodge van and subsequently involved a Jeep Compass and a Honda SUV in the melee.
Attempting to escape on foot, the teen driver was quickly nabbed by law enforcement, as stated by Fox32 Chicago. The adolescent along with a female companion who was in the Cherokee at the time of the crash, were both taken into custody. The stolen vehicle erupted into a Dodge van, carrying a woman and a 6-year-old, both of whom were rushed to the hospital and are expected to recover.
Injuries spanned among the involved parties, with each requiring medical attention. ABC7 reports that the woman and the 6-year-old girl from the Dodge van were transported to the hospital, their injuries non-life-threatening. Similarly, a woman, a 4-year-old, and a 6-year-old, all occupants of the Jeep Compass, were also hurried to the hospital with expectations set toward their full recovery.
As for the suspects' condition, the teenage driver found his way to Stroger Hospital, with police confirming his fair condition, while his accomplice was listed by Fox32 Chicago as being in fair condition at Northwestern Memorial. The lady who had been driving the Dodge was treated at Northwestern along with the children, where their conditions have been stabilized. Remarkably, those in the Honda SUV emerged without physical harm among the twisted frames and scattered debris.
In the wake of the calamity, Chicago police have articulated that charges are impending against the youthful operator of the commandeered Jeep and his passenger, as the investigation into the incident advances. Amid the flashing lights and wailing sirens, five ambulances attended the scene.
