Vacaville has officially declared Captain Chris Polen its new Chief of Police, with his term set to commence on January 1, 2025. Taking the helm of local law enforcement, Polen is expected to continue the city's legacy of prioritizing safety and community engagement.
Armed with over 25 years of experience, Polen is no stranger to the field of law enforcement or the community he vows to protect. The City Manager of Vacaville, Aaron Busch, announced the appointment, praising Polen's "extensive experience, leadership skills, and unwavering dedication," according to the City of Vacaville. Equipped with a varied background, including roles as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Sergeant, and Lieutenant, Polen's ascendancy to Chief is seen by many as a natural progression.
Polen acknowledges the significance of his promotion personally, stating, “It is both an honor and a privilege to be selected as the next Chief of Police in my hometown,” as quoted in the City of Vacaville. He expressed excitement about initiatives like the Real Time Information Center (RTIC), slated for activation next year, which he believes will significantly contribute to the city's safety infrastructure.
Before his induction into the Vacaville Police Department in 2000, his career began at Suisun City. Polen also brings academic achievements to the table with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Management and a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership. His graduation from the noteworthy Senior Management Institute for Police and the POST Executive Leadership Program augmented his qualifications, reflecting a firm foundation for his new responsibilities.
The outgoing Chief of Police, Ian Schmutzler, expressed his steadfast confidence in Polen's capabilities, echoed by colleagues and associates. Schmutzler shared, "I am thrilled that Chris Polen will succeed me as the next Chief of Police,” per the City of Vacaville.
