As the city of Chicago welcomed the New Year, the celebration was marred by a string of violence that left one person dead and at least 15 others wounded. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the tragic tally of gunshot victims stretched across neighborhoods, with the incidents occurring from New Year's Eve night through the early hours of New Year's Day morning. The victims' ages ranged from 18 to 46.
Early Wednesday morning, at around 3:30 a.m., officers discovered a 29-year-old man unresponsive with two gunshot wounds on the 9400 block of South Harvard Avenue. Pronounced dead at the scene, this marked the sole fatality in a night that strained the city's emergency response teams. The CBS News Chicago reported that none had been taken into custody as related to this homicide. While the night was supposed to herald new beginnings, these shootings presented a gravely familiar refrain of the previous years’ strife.
Among the wounded was a 43-year-old woman who, after a verbal altercation in the 1200 block of South Sawyer Avenue, was shot multiple times by a 38-year-old man. According to the police, after a critical condition, she was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, and the assailant, having been arrested nearby, now faces charges. Another instance of the night's violence included a 30-year-old man shot in the face at approximately 3:05 a.m. in the 4500 block of South Champlain Avenue by someone in a red vehicle, as per Chicago Sun-Times. He also was in critical condition and received treatment at the University of Chicago Medical Center, yet the shooter remains at large.
In an unrelated event that further illustrates the indiscriminate nature of the gunfire, a 46-year-old man and a 32-year-old man were involved in an incident in the 7000 block of South Eberhart at around 3:10 a.m., where the younger man shot the older one in the foot, causing him good condition to be transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The suspect was later apprehended by the police, as noted by CBS News Chicago, with charges pending. Even as the sun rose on the first day of 2025, the shadow of the previous night's violence loomed, stubborn against the dawn.
Other reported incidents included gunshot victims across the city who self-transported to local hospitals or were found with various injuries. They were discovered in locations such as South Kostner Avenue, South Green Street, West Wilcox Avenue, and multiple other streets and blocks across Chicago, indicating a dramatic spread of violence to greet the new year. As families and communities across the city hope for change, they reckon again with the fact that recovery from violence is not guaranteed with the turn of the calendar page. Information regarding the conditions of the wounded and the circumstances around the shootings remains under investigation, with many assailants still not in custody.
