An early morning shooting on Lafayette Road led to the expedient arrest of suspect Edwin Gonzalez-Diaz, thanks to the cooperation of community members and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) detectives. According to an IMPD News Facebook post, the shooting happened just before 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2025. IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot on the 3800 block of Lafayette Road, where they found an adult male with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, who was then taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Several witnesses at the scene cooperated with the arriving officers, providing decisive details about the events, as well as a description of the vehicle involved. Utilizing the information, IMPD Aggravated Assault Detectives were able to identify Gonzalez-Diaz as the primary suspect, and subsequently, ascertain his likely whereabouts. When officers arrived at the apartment complex in question, the vehicle suspected in the shooting was found. Upon knocking, cooperative individuals in the apartment led police directly to Gonzalez-Diaz, who was arrested without incident and expected pieces of evidence from the shooting were recovered.

Gonzalez-Diaz, 20, faces charges of battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness. While the suspect has been arrested, it is important to note, as mentioned in the IMPD News release, that "an arrest and a charge are merely an accusation, and all individuals should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law." The Marion County Prosecutor's Office is expected to make the final decision on charges regarding this case numbered IP240002823.
