A former middle school teacher was killed and her husband, a former principal, has been arrested in connection with her death on Indianapolis' northwest side. Police were called to the scene near West Kessler Boulevard and Lafayette Road on Friday, responding to a report from a 79-year-old man who admitted to beating his 76-year-old wife, Mary Ogle, to death. The Indianapolis Metro Police Department (IMPD) has confirmed the arrest of Terry Ogle, the husband and former principal, for murder.
Despite their long history in education with Forest Manor Middle School, where Mary was a teacher since 1970 and her husband a principal from 1978, both retiring in 2006, neighbors are left grappling with the incident that unfolded at the 2800 block of Questend Drive South. A neighbor, Robert Smith, recalled to WTHR how the couple "would walk the entire neighborhood holding hands," adding, "They were nice people."
According to official statements, when IMPD arrived at the residence, they found Mary Ogle with injuries consistent with trauma and pronounced her dead at the scene. During the initial call to dispatch, Terry Ogle confessed to the killing, stating, "It's too late," when asked if he wanted to perform CPR, and cited his belief that his wife was "having an affair" as the reason he "lost it." This account was detailed in court documents obtained by WTHR.
The daughter of the suspect had attempted to reach her father earlier, but received no response, prompting her to reach out to his neighbor. She later admitted to authorities that her father had sent her a text message saying, "I'm going to jail. I killed (the victim)." Despite her initial contact with her father, police reports reveal the suspect's daughter said she had not been in contact. The Murder of Mary Ogle and the subsequent arrest of her husband have sent members of the community and the Ogle and Embry families into a state of mourning, expressing their unity during this difficult time, as relayed in an interview with WTHR Chase Houle.
IMPD has now turned over its investigation to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office for review, following Terry Ogle's detainment and subsequent arrest. The IMPD's homicide detectives and the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency conducted the primary investigation, as detailed in a follow-up reports from FOX59.
