The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has publicly released edited footage from a bodycam worn during a police-involved shooting that escalated after a K9 unit was stabbed during a break-in incident in 2023. The footage, captured on Sept. 1, 2023, officers shared a detailed account of the events leading to the injury of a police K9 and the shooting of a suspect on Indianapolis's near south side.

The incident began around 7:54 p.m. when officers responded to a reported break-in at Greene's Auto and Truck Service, located at 111 W. Raymond Street. As reported by FOX59, the officers found evidence of forced entry and were aided by a K9 unit upon arrival. This swiftly escalated when the responding K9 named Ringo was stabbed, leading the officers to discharge their weapons in response to the perceived threat.

Detailed by the video, which was released yesterday, the suspect, identified as Brandon Ramirez, refused to leave the building, despite officers' orders, according to information by WTHR. The officers, finding the windows and doors shattered, had been called to the location following reports from the business owner of an unauthorized presence inside, observed via security cameras.

WRTV's coverage revealed that officers, upon noticing the broken glass front door, proceeded to quickly request backup from K9 officers. The situation unfolded into a confrontation in which Ramirez, allegedly armed and dangerous, was ultimately shot by the police.

The release of this bodycam footage is part of the IMPD's transparency efforts. The department's decision to share an edited version of the video, more than two years after the incident, offers a clearer view of the events leading up to the critical moments of that September evening.
