The Indiana House of Representatives approved a resolution to name a part of State Road 75 in memory of a local hero. State Rep. Heath VanNatter's proposal honors fallen Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy Noah C. Rainey, who lost his life in the line of duty two years ago. The segment of road, running between County Road 700 S and County Road 800 S, represents more than just asphalt and lines; it's now a symbol of a community's loss and respect.
The tragedy that befell Rainey occurred on January 29, 2022—precisely three years ago—claiming the life of the deputy and his comrade, jail Deputy Dane Northcutt. While responding to a call, their commitment to duty led to an ultimate sacrifice. On that fateful day, Deputy Rainey was on this very stretch of road, making the dedication deeply tied to his last journey as protector and servant. According to a statement obtained by Indiana House Republicans, VanNatter emphasized that "Deputy Rainey dedicated his life to serving and protecting our community and state... Renaming a section of road after him is the least we can do to honor his memory and sacrifice."
Rainey's career in law enforcement spanned multiple agencies; before his time at the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, where he served for four years, Rainey had been a part of the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana Department of Correction. His career spirit embodied a commitment that permeated through each role, earning him the respect and veneration necessary for such a posthumous honor.
The Indiana Senate now needs to approve the resolution for the road renaming. If passed, the Indiana Department of Transportation will make the changes in Carroll County. This act will honor Deputy Rainey’s memory, ensuring his legacy remains a part of the community.
