The recent move by Indiana Governor Mike Braun to eliminate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives has kicked up a storm of backlash, with the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus leading the charge against the controversial rollback, decrying the decision as counterproductive to the state's growth and demeaning to its core values – in a statement obtained by the Indiana Senate Democrats, Senator Shelli Yoder (D-Bloomington) expressed that the elimination of these programs is "a deliberate choice to ignore what makes Indiana stronger and more competitive."
DEI efforts, often held up as drivers of innovation and competitiveness, appear to have met an untimely end in Indiana, and the implications extend far beyond mere policy changes; studies, such as one by McKinsey, found that companies in the top quartile for diversity were likely to see financial performance outshine their peers by 35%, the same inclusive workplaces translate to better decision-making, innovation, and ultimately ring up as increased financial performance—a winning recipe for state governments who yearn for effectiveness in serving constituents. Senator Andrea Hunley (D-Indianapolis) echoed these sentiments, telling the Indiana Senate Democrats that "Stripping DEI efforts is a disservice to every Hoosier who believes in fairness and opportunity."
Throughout Dr. Karrah Herring's tenure as Indiana's first chief equity, inclusion, and opportunity officer, the state saw the launch of initiatives like the Equity Data Portal and training programs that reached hundreds, forging inroads for marginalized communities into wider employment opportunities and addressing larger systemic issues such as teacher shortages and falling college enrollment numbers. The Caucus, representing Indiana's diverse population, insists that this isn't a matter bounded by party lines but one of cultivating a future of success for the state, as voiced by Senator Rodney Pol Jr. (D-Chesterton) when he said to the Indiana Senate Democrats, "Our government should be a model of fairness and opportunity, not a barrier to it."
The Senate Democratic Caucus is now calling upon Governor Braun to overturn this divisive decision and collaborate with legislators to bolster policies that embed fairness, respect, and inclusivity at the heart of Indiana's government.
