Reflecting on a tragedy that deeply impacted the Indianapolis community, the North District IMPD recently commemorated the ultimate sacrifice of Officer David Moore with a solemn remembrance on social media. In a Facebook post shared yesterday, the department honored Moore's memory, recalling his service and the morning of January 23, 2011, when he was shot in the line of duty.
While on patrol, Officer Moore engaged with a stolen vehicle in the 3400 block of North Temple Avenue when he was fatally wounded by an assailant. The officer, who had not even had the chance to unholster his weapon, sustained multiple gunshots, including to his chest and face, despite wearing a bullet-resistant vest. Officer Moore was rushed to Wishard Memorial Hospital where he valiantly fought for his life in a coma before his passing.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a 60-year-old parolee was subsequently arrested on the same evening and later pleaded guilty to charges of murder, robbery, and illegal firearm possession. Officer Moore's assailant will be spending life behind bars without parole, according to the plea agreement detailed in the proceedings that concluded in March 2012.
During his 6-½ years of service, Officer Moore was a dedicated member of the North District, a commitment that did not go unrecognized as he was posthumously decorated with the department's Medal of Honor and Purple Heart. In their homage, the IMPD assured, "Officer David Spencer Moore, will we never forget your service and sacrifice so that others may live."
