Following a swift investigation, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) detectives have taken a 20-year-old man into custody in connection with a homicide that occurred in early January. Yesterday, Jason Powell was arrested on charges related to the January 3 murder of Shannon Campbell, aged 23, and the attempted murder of a second victim, IMPD News reported.

IMPD officers were alerted to the incident after received a report of a person shot in the 1800 block of Howard Street just after 3:30 p.m. on January 3. On arrival, they discovered two male victims outside suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite emergency medical efforts, Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene. Having transported to an area hospital, the second victim was listed in critical condition.

Detectives leveraged information from the scene to rapidly identify a suspect vehicle associated with the crime. Further utilization of technology and investigative techniques led investigators to suspect Jason Powell of the heinous act.

An operation led by the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) tracked Powell down on the 2800 block of Ludwig Avenue. IMPD SWAT was called to assist and managed to apprehend him without incident. Following a consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Powell has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

Powell's arrest is the start of a legal process in which he's presumed innocent until proven guilty. "An arrest and a charge are merely an accusation," IMPD News emphasized, reminding the public that the court of law is the arena where guilt or innocence will ultimately be determined. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is tasked with making the final decision on charges for case IP250000895.
