An Indianapolis man was hospitalized following a collision on I-74 earlier today. As reported by FOX59, the accident happened on the eastbound side of the interstate near the 118-mile marker. It involved a 2015 Freightliner box truck, operated by a 26-year-old man from Missouri, and a 2016 GMC full-size van driven by the 58-year-old Indianapolis resident.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the Shelby County Fire Department, the Waldrum Volunteer Fire Department, and the Indiana State Police were called to the scene around 8:21 a.m., as detailed by The Republic. Trapped inside his vehicle after reportedly rear-ending the box truck, the van driver had to be extricated by the Shelbyville Fire Department.
The victim was subsequently transported to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment, while the box truck driver, who was looked at the scene, refused further treatment. This information is according to a statement obtained by WTHR. The crash led to a temporary shutdown of this portion of I-74 for over two hours, as reported by FOX59, causing significant delays for morning commuters.
Davis Towing and Recovery as well as Ross Wrecker Service helped at the scene, alongside units from the Waldron Volunteer Fire Department and the Indiana State Police, told The Republic. The thoroughfare was reopened to traffic approximately at 10:54 a.m., marking the end of an incident that remains under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff Department.
