A teenager has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a dog in Indianapolis, as per IMPD News. The 17-year-old male faces multiple charges, including dangerous possession of a firearm and killing a domestic animal. This follows an investigation launched after a report of a dog being shot last Thursday.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's Nuisance and Abatement Unit (NAU) responded quickly to help swiftly investigate the incident that took place on Hillside Avenue. A Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy was in the vicinity when the shooting occurred, and together with information from neighbors and the suspect, who initially gave a false name, the detectives began to unravel the case. The dog, found to be neither aggressive nor belonging to the juvenile, was shot in broad daylight while other community members were outside. As announced in a social media post by IMPD News, the community's cooperation, video footage, and analysis from IMPD Real Time Crime Center analysts were pivotal to positively identifying the young suspect.
The teenager was located last Tuesday by detectives and the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force on Baltimore Avenue. Upon detention, a handgun with a large capacity magazine was observed sticking out from his pocket, believed by detectives to be the weapon used in the shooting. Further complicating the case, the firearm was reported stolen. IMPD NAU detectives subsequently arrested the 17-year-old on several grounds, including dangerous possession of a firearm, criminal recklessness, torture or mutilation of a domestic animal; killing a domestic animal, along with providing a false identity statement.
