The Indy Ignite, Indianapolis' newest sports franchise, triumphed in their first match on Saturday against the Orlando Valkyries, delivering an energetic start to their second season in the Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF). From the Fishers Event Center, the Ignite came back after losing the first set to clinch the victory in four sets, with the final scores reported by FOX59 as 25-19, 25-17, and 25-21 in favor of the Ignite.
After a shaky start that led to a 25-13 loss in the first set, the team rallied impressively for a come-from-behind victory, no doubt delighting the sellout crowd of 7,500 fans. Leaders on the court included Leketor Member-Meneh with her 25 kills and Azhani Tealer contributing 19, as reported by FOX59. Sydney Hilley also played a pivotal role for the Ignite, notching up 44 assists and 15 digs throughout the game. The majority of the offense from Orlando came from their standout player, Brittany Abercrombie, who tallied 17 kills alone.
A palpable excitement hung in the Fishers Event Center as the crowd witnessed the historic match. "Thank you fans for making history with us," announced an emcee during the game. Mandy Gripe, an enthusiast of both the Ignite and the Indiana Fever, compared the atmosphere to Fever games and described the experience as "really cool to see it and witness all of it. It's history," she told IndyStar. This event marks another significant moment in women's professional sports in the city.
The enthusiasm for the team had been building since before the match began, with team president and general manager Mary Kay Huse commenting on the local support: "We’re absolutely a volleyball state. We’re sports state. And that’s just shining through," she said, as noted by WISH-TV. With the first home game sellout and a fan-pre-party bonfire with a DJ and s'mores, the community's reception underscores the state's reputation as a budding haven for volleyball.
As the Ignite's inaugural season continues, they will play 28 games before it concludes in May, according to FOX59. With a strong start and a fanbase already ignited by their passion for the sport, the Indy Ignite are poised to become a vibrant addition to the city's professional sports tapestry.
