Las Cruces residents are being called to action as the local police department gears up to host a Town Hall Meeting aimed at tackling the pressing issues of crime, mental illness, and substance addiction within the community. The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) invites the public to actively participate in the discussion on January 23, at the City Council Chambers located at Las Cruces City Hall, according to the City of Las Cruces.
The meeting will kick off at 6 p.m. and is expected to run approximately two hours. LCPD Chief Jeremy Story is set to open the event with a review of the area's crime statistics from 2024. The agenda also includes a deeper dive into the interconnected challenges posed by the current judicial processes surrounding competency and pre-trial detention, which Chief Story suggests have contributed to creating a "perfect storm" in the area.
Residents are encouraged to use this platform to dialog with law enforcement officers, grasp a better understanding of the issues at hand, and offer their input on the proposed changes. LCPD is reaching out especially to community members and local business proprietors, urging them to come forward and share their perspectives. "The legislative session is about to start, and there is hope that meaningful change can happen with our community’s help," said LCPD Chief Jeremy Story, as per the City of Las Cruces. Policymakers are signaling a readiness to implement transformational strategies, but there is an acknowledgment that these cannot take root without public backing and ground-level engagement.
