Residents of Lawrence will need to hold onto their trash for one more day as the city grapples with the aftermath of the recent winter storm. City officials have announced the suspension of all solid waste services for tomorrow, to ensure the safety of the Solid Waste team members who face the perils of icy conditions. No garbage trucks will rumble down the slippery streets; the sanitation process is on a temporary freeze.
"Our crews are dedicated people who work tirelessly in all kinds of conditions to serve our community," said Ron Green, General Manager of Solid Waste in a statement obtained by the City of Lawrence official website. "However, with the dangerous conditions caused by the storm, it’s essential that we put their safety above all else." As bins overflow and routines are disturbed, citizens are prompted to adjust their schedules and expectations alike.
With aims to minimize inconvenience, the City plans to resume waste collection operations on Tuesday, January 7. This will set off a domino effect as the service shift moves each pick-up day forward by one. Monday's refuse will be collected on Tuesday, Wednesday will cover for Tuesday's allotment, and so on, all the way through Saturday, when Friday's waste will finally see disposal.
Should Mother Nature insist on prolonging these wintry obstacles and further disruptions arise, updates will be provided via the official social media and press releases on Monday.
