A Lombard contractor got more than he bargained for while renovating his family's bathroom, uncovering a Christmas gift from 1978 sandwiched within the walls of his childhood home, as NBC Chicago reports. The unexpected discovery was made by Tim King, who stumbled upon the long-lost present, still wrapped and with his name on it, during a seemingly routine project at his parents' abode.
According to WGN-TV, King, owner of TKING Construction Services, was quoted saying, "Before we closed up the drywall on the wall, I was like, 'I should probably look and see that there is nothing back there,' and sure enough, there was a present," highlighting the serendipity of the find, and how the wrapped package had remained concealed, untouched by time for nearly half a century.
The house, a familial heirloom built by King's great-grandparents and expanded by successive generations, had its origins as a summer retreat from the urban bustle of Chicago. King believes the gift—a set of Matchbox Thunder Jets—was likely hidden in the attic for a Christmas surprise and inadvertently slipped into an unseen crevice between the walls when his parents were concealing holiday presents, as both sources indicated.
"So when I pulled that out, it was super old wrapping paper, and then I was like, 'Oh crap, that has my name on it,'" King shared with WGN-TV, his astonishment palpable upon recognizing the personal touch of his name on the gift's exterior. His mother, present when he opened the gift, purportedly had no recollection of purchasing the toy. The discovery didn't just reveal a forgotten item, it also brought forth the whimsical nostalgia and the timeless joy of receiving a toy during the holiday season; King noted that as a six-year-old, the Matchbox Thunder Jets would have made an excellent gift and he documented the unboxing on his company's Instagram page @tking_cs, sharing this blast from the past with a wider audience.
